The Alarm.com ADC-T40K-HD Smart Thermostat is a Z-Wave Plus capable thermostat with a full-color HD touchscreen display. With mechanical wire detection and an Easy Setup Wizard, the ADC-T40K-HD is simple to configure. One thing to note prior to purchase, this thermostat does require a C-Wire so that it can receive power from the HVAC system or a 24VAC transformer.

The ADC-T40K-HD is the model number for the product as a whole. Unlike most thermostats, the touchscreen, and the thermostat itself are separate parts. The Thermostat (Part Number: ADC-T40) is the portion of the device that mounts to the trim plate and connects to all the wiring for the HVAC system. The display (Part Number: ADC-T40-HD) mounts to the thermostat using magnets. The thermostat is the component that communicates with the Z-Wave network. The display is the component that contains the humidity and temperature sensor. Technically, the thermostat can be used without the display, this is considered a headless installation. So far, we have not found the display and the thermostat sold separately.
The ability to interconnect separate parts of your home and have them work together to perform certain functions is the core of home automation. With its Z-Wave Plus capability, the ADC-T40K-HD will connect to your Z-Wave Plus automation controller and allow you to both manually control the thermostat through the controller, and automate the HVAC system based on other events, to save energy. For example, you could create an automation that sets the thermostat to an energy-saving temperature automatically, once you arm your security system to the Away mode.
All Z-Wave devices can work together. This means that a Z-Wave Plus controller will still work with a standard Z-Wave device, such as an outlet or a light switch. However, by mixing Z-Wave and Z-Wave Plus devices on the same network, you will lose some of the features that make Z-Wave Plus a more reliable protocol with better transmitting range, and improved battery life. For this reason, it is always recommended to use a Z-Wave Plus controller with Z-Wave plus devices, replacing any standard Z-Wave devices with their Z-Wave Plus counterparts.
The ADC-T40K-HD offers local scheduling, but only when the thermostat is not connected to a smart home automation controller. Once the thermostat becomes part of your Z-Wave Network, all scheduling should be performed through the automation system. By using the scheduling features available through automation, you can add, edit, or delete a schedule from any location that has access to the internet.
Presumably, the Alarm.com ADC-T40K-HD can be used with any Z-Wave Plus controller, but it is made by Alarm.com to work with systems that are compatible with their service. Alarm.com allows the user to integrate alarm system events with this and other Z-Wave devices to make life easier and more comfortable. Using the Alarm.com App, which is available as a free download from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store, a user can check their alarm system status, verify the status of automation devices, manually control their system and devices, and create automation scenes to make devices turn on or off based on events or schedules. There is also a website where you can log in and set things up using a computer, which may be easier to use during initial setup.
