SkyBell doorbell cameras are not compatible with digital chimes out of the box. This adapter is what makes that install work, and without it a digital chime site produces the classic symptoms: a doorbell that buzzes, rings constantly, or will not ring at all.
Built for the installer
Identify the chime type before the visit, not after. A mechanical chime has a physical striker and a clear metallic ring; a digital chime plays a tone through a speaker. If it is digital, this adapter goes on the order alongside the doorbell.
Separately, a transformer with no doorbell chime in the circuit at all needs a 10 watt 10 ohm resistor rather than this adapter. Those are two different problems with two different parts, and mixing them up is a common cause of a return visit.
