When would I use a surface box instead of a recessed electrical box?
Use the AB4G-SB when a standard 4 in. electrical box isn't available at the mounting location - common in retrofit jobs, exposed-ceiling commercial spaces, open-plenum ceilings, and concrete structures where cutting a recess isn't practical.
Does the surface box affect the sounder base's sound output?
No. The surface box is a mounting enclosure only. It does not alter the audible output characteristics of the sounder base mounted to it. Sound output ratings (dBA) are determined by the sounder base model itself.
Can this be used with non-AB4G Kidde detector bases?
No. The AB4G-SB is specifically sized for the AB4G sounder base family. Standard Intelligent detector bases (without the sounder) use different mounting hardware.
