Surge protectors lose effectiveness over time. That's why Metra designed the Big Dog PR-R13PI and the PR-V7PI with replaceable surge modules. When the included modules have exhausted their lifespan, you can replace them and keep the units working in the field. This 3060-joule protection module works with the 13-outlet module, specifically.

You can check the LED status light and track the "surge mileage" with Metra's MAVbase web and mobile app. When the surge module is expended simply swap in a new one.
